Set on a historic waterfront property in Muskoka Lakes, this 6,700-square-foot cottage has evolved over nearly two centuries, serving as a family retreat while retaining its traditional charm. Tasked with modernizing the home, Reigo & Bauer carefully preserved original architectural features while introducing contemporary elements that reflect the owners’ love of art, colour, and design.

The renovation focuses on contrast rather than imitation. Crisp black-and-white interventions, custom millwork, and modern furnishings are layered over the cottage’s existing cedar-lined interiors, creating a dialogue between old and new. Throughout the home, bold furniture, playful lighting, and a curated collection of Pop Art bring personality and energy to the traditional setting.

Key spaces, including the kitchen and bathrooms, were reimagined with clean-lined contemporary insertions that stand apart from the historic fabric of the building. Colour is introduced selectively through furnishings, textiles, and accessories, giving each room a distinct identity while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
The project extends beyond the interiors to include a refreshed screened veranda overlooking the lake and a custom-designed dockside entertaining area featuring weather-resistant storage, cooking facilities, and integrated amenities. The result is a warm and highly personal retreat that celebrates the cottage’s history while embracing modern family living.
