Set within the rugged landscape of Ontario’s Muskoka region, this 7,500-square-foot family retreat by AKB Architects is designed to integrate with its natural surroundings. Clad in rough-sawn cedar and western red cedar shakes, the multi-generational cottage draws inspiration from traditional northern cabins while expressing a distinctly contemporary architectural language.

LOCATION:
Muskoka, ON, Canada

Organized as three interconnected volumes, the residence balances private bedroom wings with a central gathering space featuring vaulted ceilings, European oak finishes, and expansive lake views. Large retractable glass walls and screened openings blur the boundary between indoors and out, creating a seamless connection to the surrounding forest, shoreline, and fresh air.

The home’s material palette emphasizes natural aging and craftsmanship, with cedar, concrete, granite, Venetian plaster, and steel selected to develop character over time. Deep roof overhangs, passive ventilation strategies, and the integration of the building within the site’s existing topography contribute to its year-round comfort and environmental responsiveness.

Additional amenities, including a sauna, fitness room, recreation spaces, and direct access to lakeside pathways, support both family life and entertaining. The result is a refined yet relaxed retreat where contemporary design, natural materials, and the Muskoka landscape come together to create a cottage designed to evolve gracefully with time.
