Located on a secluded peninsula along a motorboat-free lake in Ontario, Long Lake Cottage is an off-grid retreat designed by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design for a couple seeking a deeper connection to nature. After spending a year camping on the property, the owners envisioned a year-round gathering place that would embrace the surrounding forest while accommodating accessible, multigenerational living.

The two-level cottage is carefully embedded into the rugged landscape, with its main living spaces elevated into the tree canopy to maximize views of the lake and forest. Accessed by a bridge, the upper level features an open-concept living, dining, and kitchen area framed by expansive glazing and wrap-around decks that blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors. A cast concrete fireplace, white oak millwork, and western hemlock ceilings create a warm, natural interior palette.

Below, five guest bedrooms open directly to the forest through floor-to-ceiling windows and private exterior entrances, while an accessible bedroom on the upper floor ensures the retreat can be enjoyed by family members of all ages and abilities.

Built entirely off-grid, the cottage is powered by solar energy and constructed primarily from sustainably sourced wood, including locally milled species. Greyed cedar and charcoal-stained spruce allow the exterior to recede into the landscape, while continuous wood detailing extends from the interior to the outdoor living spaces. Fully winterized and designed for all seasons, Long Lake Cottage offers a thoughtful balance of sustainability, accessibility, and immersion in nature.
