Conestoga College’s Indigenous Services Office Reimagined
Blending natural materials and sacred design principles, the transformed space fosters inclusivity, community, and cultural connection for Indigenous students and faculty.
INDIGENOUS SERVICES AND COMMUNITY SERVICES OFFICES

In 2023, a part of Conestoga College’s ‘A Wing’ underwent a revitalization, transforming the Indigenous Services and Community Services Offices to foster deeper connections within the college and community beyond. The redesigned Indigenous Services office was thoughtfully crafted to create a welcoming and inclusive space that supports Indigenous students and faculty in their academic, cultural, and personal journeys.

Natural elements are seamlessly integrated throughout the interior, with wood finishes on millwork, furniture, and ceilings, complemented by organic motifs on privacy film – reinforcing a deep connection to the natural world.
A centerpiece of the redesign is the Ceremony Room, intentionally shaped to emphasize a circular layout. In Indigenous culture, the circle is a sacred shape that symbolizes interconnectedness, unity, and balance. Curved partitions, circular ceiling elements, and soft ambient lighting work together to honor this sacred motif. Additionally, the space supports traditional smudging practices with a dedicated ventilation system designed to safely manage the process.
